How does rain, sleet, hail and snow form?
(Notes for self)
Precipitation is part of the water cycle. Precipitation falls to the ground as snow and rain. It eventually evaporates and rises back into the atmosphere as a gas. Water vapour, droplets of water suspended in the air, builds up in Earth's atmosphere. Water vapor in the atmosphere is visible as clouds and fog. Water vapour collects with other materials, such as dust, in clouds.
Precipitation condenses, or forms, around these tiny pieces of material, called cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).

Where does rain come from?

1. The air is full of water vapour.
2. When air cools down the water vapour condenses from a gas into a liquid and forms tiny water droplets.
3. Water droplets gather to form clouds.
4. The water droplets get bigger and heavier. The air can't hold them up any longer.
5. The water droplets fall down to the ground as rain.

Rain is part of the water cycle. Clouds eventually get too full of water vapour, and the precipitation turns into a liquid (rain) or a solid (snow).
