Research - inspiration: Fashion magazines, wintery vibes, strong silhouettes and shape language. Focus on human figures for "Social" theme - not on environment. Animals yes.
Vintage travel posters - colours that pop, sense of warmth, dramatic framing - more landscape focused
Carlisle city - full of character, history and beautiful architecture
Thumbnails and colour test
Cat
Second figure - make the text act as the "table"
Large cat
Key points:
Balance image, blue in centre, yellows in umbrella and ground, figures have similar clothing, pink in cat reflected in figures scarf and milkshake.
Harsh evening lighting. Warm summer evening, cool dark night.
Figures not posed with furniture, chairs suggested, table is made with text.
Polygonal ground to indicate stonework - cobbles are a big part of Carlisle
The cafe scene in the town centre is bustling
Lots of outdoor seating with iconic umbrella silhouettes
Scrapped idea: Industry - biscuits - dark red background - yellow biscuits
Thumbnail design:
Industry - TRAINS - railway
Eden bridge with a train - the river passing underneath and a blue sky - inspired by vintage travel postcards
Text is the steam coming off the train - similar to how previous poster used text to become an object in the piece (table)
Carlisle is WILD (butterflies)
Kind of basic idea - not hyper specific to Carlisle - need to add more recognisable imagery related to the city. Green colour theme more harmonious but less eye catching. White background too harsh need to knock it back
Reworking Eden bridge poster (there was never a train on there whoops). Main things: BRIDGE, clouds and wave pattern of river, SUN.
Experimenting with texture
Eden bridge is a historical monument therefore "Resilient" is a better theme as the poster doesn't have any wildlife. -Added a grainy rain texture to the river and sky - the sun is still present but hidden behind a shadow or a buffer -Made the word resilient in line with "Carlisle is" hinting at the words properties (e.g. its big, bold -> resilient)
(mini side quest)
It turned into a snake dragon thing. Carlisle is under attack (lol) This doesn't really have anything to do with the project I just wanted to be silly.
Second lecture notes
